The Russian Foreign Ministry has expressed confidence in the successful implementation of the North Stream Gas Pipeline 2 despite US pressure on European partners.
"The timing of the completion of construction depends on many factors, including weather conditions ... and we continue to emphasize the successful implementation of the line despite the increasing pressure from the US authorities on business partners in Western Europe," said Oleg Tabkin, director of the European department of the ministry, told Sputnik. We "proceed from the fact that German Chancellor Angela Merkel's recent statements that the German government's position in support of the Northern Stream 2 has not changed."
Tabkin stressed the Russian company's commitment to implementing the trade agreements that were signed, including with many German companies.
It is noteworthy that the North Stream 2 project includes the construction of a gas pipeline with a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters annually from the Russian coast across the Baltic Sea to Germany. Nord Stream 2 AG is carrying out this project with the sole shareholder, which is the Russian company, Gazprom.
The United States opposes the project, as it imposed sanctions on its participants last December and demanded that the joint-stock companies immediately stop laying the pipeline.
