After the upcoming transformation of Grandpuits into a biorefinery, here is a new step in the greening of Total's refining activities in France.
The oil company, allied with the energy company Engie, announced on Wednesday that it was launching a first green hydrogen production project on its site in La Mède (Bouches-du-Rhône).
Refineries need hydrogen in their fuel manufacturing process.
Until now, all over the world, they have used gray hydrogen, derived from fossil fuels, the production of which emits a lot of CO2.
The Masshylia project by Engie and Total, hosted within the refinery, consists of producing hydrogen from water and electricity, with an electrolyser with an industrial power of 40 megawatts.
It will initially supply 5 tonnes of green hydrogen per day.
What to avoid the emission of 15,000 tons of CO2 per year, calculate the promoters of the project.
Electricity will be supplied by a photovoltaic park with a power of approximately
