French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian proposed today to freeze the trade confrontation between the United States and the European Union.
"The issue that is poisoning everyone is the problem of escalating prices and taxes on steel, digital technology, Airbus and in particular our wine sector," Le Drian said in an interview with the French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche.
He added, "If we can quickly find a way to settle this dispute with Europe and France, then this will be a step forward."
Washington's new tariffs announced at the end of the year target French and German products, 25 percent on non-fizzy wine and cognac and 15 percent on some aviation items.
These duties come into effect a few days before the end of Donald Trump's term, during which the US's trade relations with the European Union have deteriorated significantly, and these taxes are added to those imposed since 2019 on European products, wine, cheese, olive oil, whiskey and on Airbus aircraft.
