Covid-19: is the drop in life expectancy as strong for young people as for those over 60?

2021-01-20T14:22:45.418Z

THE VERIFICATION - INSEE has calculated that in 2020, life expectancies at 60 years of age fall by the same length as in 2019 as life expectancies at birth, which may appear counter-intuitive.

THE QUESTION.

INSEE has just published the demographic report for 2020. As expected, the Covid-19 epidemic has caused exceptional excess mortality.

And, as expected, this results in a quasi-mechanical decline in the life expectancy of the French, unprecedented since 1945. The fall is 0.5 years for men (six months) and 0.4 years. (nearly 5 months for women).

This slight difference confirms that the epidemic has been more deadly for men than for women.

However, more surprisingly,

“in 2020, life expectancies at 60 years of age decrease compared to 2019 by the same length as life expectancies at birth: -0.4 years for women and -0.5 years for women. men,

”stressed Sylvie Le Minez, head of the demographic and social studies unit at INSEE, presenting this report.

The impact of the epidemic on longevity was therefore as decisive for the very young, adolescents and young adults, as it was for the elderly and the elderly.

This result seems totally counterintuitive when we know that the coronavirus has practically no death in the youngest generations, at least up to 45-55 years.

How is it possible ?

Should we review the idea according to which the younger generations would be spared by the Covid-19?
