An extraordinary year, 2020 will not have reshuffled the cards of mass distribution in France.
Independent distributors, as opposed to integrated groups such as Carrefour, Auchan or Casino, have emerged very clearly strengthened from the great maelstrom of 2020. Intermarché, Leclerc and Système U, all three made up of independent business leaders who each have their own store, are alongside Lidl - an integrated - the three distributors that gained the most market share last year, according to Kantar.
They seem well armed to confirm their success in 2021, when the pressure on shelf prices will increase.
Intermarché and its discounter Netto are the big winners of this exceptional year.
The third largest French distributor gained 0.7 point of market share to 15.7%.
Leclerc, leader in France, gained 0.4 points, to 22% market share.
As for Système U, it increased by 0.3 point to 11.1%, thus widening the gap with Auchan.
