The merger with Siemens failed due to resistance from the EU Commission. Instead, the French rail manufacturer Alstom has now taken over the train division of Bombardier - for 5.5 billion euros.

The French rail technology manufacturer Alstom has completed its merger with the train division of the Canadian group Bombardier.

The purchase cost Alstom 5.5 billion euros.

After the merger, it is now the second largest rail manufacturer in the world - behind the Chinese group CRRC.

Among other things, Alstom manufactures the French TGV high-speed trains.

The expanded group has a turnover of around 15.7 billion euros and an order book worth 71.1 billion euros, Alstom announced.

In Germany alone, the association employs around 9,000 people at several locations.

The rail division of the Canadian Bombardier Group is headquartered in Berlin and is the most important supplier to Deutsche Bahn.

There are 75,000 worldwide.

Alstom merger with Siemens failed

Around two years ago, an initially planned merger between Alstom and the train division of Siemens failed due to resistance from EU competition officials.

This veto had led to protests in Berlin and Paris.

IG Metall welcomed the merger.

"Now the focus for us is the expectation of future-proof jobs and locations," said the district manager for Berlin and Brandenburg, Birgit Dietze.
