Sports players in the doldrums

2021-02-05T19:58:06.036Z

In 2020, activity plummeted by 21%, a decrease of 15 billion euros, according to figures from a Groupe BPCE study.

The sport sector is on the ropes.

One year after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, Groupe BPCE publishes its Sector Observatory, which includes the results of all players (equipment manufacturers, distributors, clubs, associations, sports halls, coaches, etc.).

In 2020, activity plummeted by 21%, a decrease of 15 billion euros, according to figures presented on Friday.

Before the crisis, the sector hoped to be familiar with the 80 billion euros.

For their part, the resources of associations have plummeted by 30%.

According to BPCE, one in four companies considers that its turnover has been cut in half.

Asked about the solvency of their company, 70% of managers have

"a reserved judgment"

on the strength of their balance sheet and 23% consider it fragile.

Resilience comes to a large extent from state support mechanisms (short-time working, loan guaranteed by the state, solidarity funds, etc.).

The Observatory shows that 86% of companies use at least one of these solutions, and 82% for employer associations.

"The challenge for the months to come will be a gradual abandonment of these systems

," underlines Alain Tourdjman, director of studies and prospects for Groupe BPCE.

If

this support ends too quickly, most of the players will encounter major difficulties. ”

At the moment, the horizon suffers from too many uncertainties to establish a timetable for recovery: no scheduled reopening of sports halls, no reception of the public for professional clubs, no events…

The hope of the Olympics in 2024

Another factor of resilience lies in the evolution of the offer: between online sales tools, distance learning courses, smartphone applications or the development of new (outdoor) activities, the sector is giving itself a little oxygen.

A phenomenon supported by the high number of business creations, more than 11,000, although in decline.

In light of the constraints of the pandemic, will the sport sector have to reinvent itself?

Some 15% of professionals surveyed by BPCE consider that the model will have to evolve, 44% deem profound adaptations necessary and 38% still hope that things will return to the way they were before.

Among the glimmers of hope, BPCE evokes the prospect of the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024, with

"a powerful ripple effect favorable to most disciplines"

and the confidence of the players in the ability of this deadline to

"boost the industry. sport ”
