A hit to the Telegram messaging app;

The Central District Court - Lod ruled over the weekend (Thursday) that Telegram will be obligated to prevent groups in the app from distributing copyright-infringing content.

The lawsuit, which was filed by the organization Zira - Copyright on the Internet, through attorneys Eran Presenti and Liraz Zalmanson from the firm of M.

Piron & Co. sought to prohibit the Telegram application from enabling the activities of telegram groups in which violations of original works protected in Israel are committed under Israeli law.

The infringing telegram groups are "Nati Media", "Dov Films and Series", "Gozlan", "Series" and "SDAROT".

Telegram, for their part, responded that they would like to receive a list of films that violate copyright laws and download them from the platform, but they are not willing to block groups in the app and take action against the infringement in these groups.

As part of this, Telegram did act to download many films that are protected by law but not immediately and not in a way that put the minds of the additional plaintiffs responsible for the works.

In Judge Rami Amir's ruling, an order was issued prohibiting Telegram or anyone on its behalf or directing it, either directly or indirectly, from making it available to the public or allowing it to be made available to the public within the infringing telegram groups.

The judge also ruled that Telegram would pay the plaintiffs compensation in the amount of NIS 100,000 and another NIS 60,000 in legal expenses and that "the plaintiffs will be entitled to take any new claim against any of the defendants as long as the plaintiffs come to the attention of other infringing groups under Telegram."

Advocate Eran Presenti, partner and head of the intellectual property department at M. Firon & Co., said: "We welcome the order which will help eradicate pirated viewing and the wholesale copyright infringement that takes place unhindered on the Telegram network.

These days we are working with Telegram in order to bring about the implementation of the order and we will not hesitate to act again against any platform, in all courts and by all means to eradicate similar phenomena.

The rights and livelihoods of producers and creators in Israel are not in vain. "
