Most students would like to live and work in a big city after they graduate.

This is shown by an as yet unpublished study by the Technical University of Munich on behalf of the Family Business Foundation.

It is therefore becoming increasingly difficult for companies in rural areas to find young engineers and managers, even if they are world market leaders in technological niches.

Half of the students surveyed want to go to a city with at least half a million inhabitants, a third to cities between 50,000 and 500,000 inhabitants.

"The continuing trend towards urban work" makes it particularly difficult for companies in rural regions to find suitable skilled workers in view of the general shortage of skilled workers, wrote economics professor Alwine Mohnen in her study.

In addition, large companies pay higher wages on average than small ones.

In addition to remuneration, what is decisive for young applicants: the working atmosphere and good career opportunities.

Good arguments for moving to the country

Family businesses are rated positively, particularly with regard to a good working atmosphere and personal development opportunities.

You could use it to advertise a lot more.

Affordable living space could also be an argument for young professionals to go to the country.

A good 90 percent of companies in Germany are family businesses.

They provide almost 60 percent of the jobs.

Many of them are located in rural areas.

In order to continue to score with technological expertise, they would not only have to keep experienced employees, but also gain new ones.

"When it comes to recruiting young, qualified employees, family businesses have a decisive advantage that they should highlight: Generation Y employees in particular perceive the work-life balance as very positive," said the Munich economic researchers.
