In Hong Kong, a five-room apartment has been sold for the proud price of the equivalent of 49 million euros.

The 313 square meter apartment beat all records set in Asia so far, as local media reported on Wednesday.

More expensive apartments have already been sold in the Chinese special administrative zone - but never at a square meter price of more than 156,000 euros.

This record was last set in 2017.

The apartment is located in a newly built luxury apartment building in the affluent Mid-Levels area.

It was unclear who bought it.

The award shows once again the extreme contrasts in the metropolis, which has already been named the most expensive housing market in the world several times.

There impoverished elderly people can be seen on the streets, which in turn are lined with luxury cars and expensive shops.

The latest political unrest and protests in Hong Kong as well as the Corona crisis led to a record decline in economic output of 6.1 percent in 2020, and unemployment is currently 6.6 percent, the highest in 16 years.

At the same time, the city's rich are getting richer.

While there were 40 billionaires in Hong Kong in 2012, there were 71 billionaires in 2019. This is one of the highest figures per inhabitant in the world.
