A relatively stable level of partial unemployment compared to the previous month, according to an estimate published on Wednesday.

About 2.1 million private sector employees were on short-time work in January, a relatively stable level compared to the previous month, according to an estimate released Wednesday by Dares, the statistics service of the Ministry of Labor.

They were 2.5 million in December, but in full-time equivalent, the number is stable at 1.1 million, according to this survey on the activity and employment conditions of the workforce during the health crisis of Covid-19.

At the height of the crisis in the spring, nearly 9 million employees were affected.

The share of partial unemployment due to mandatory closings was stable in January (28%) and remains predominant in small businesses, accommodation and catering and other service activities, specifies the Dares.

And the amount of partial activity allowance for the month of January is estimated at 1.6 billion euros, paid by the State and Unedic.

The Dares had estimated at the end of January the total cost of the partial activity at 27.1 billion in 2020.

The study also indicates that during the month of January, just over a quarter (26%) of employees were at least one day teleworking, as in November and December.

But the number of weekly telecommuting days fell in January, says Dares.

The share of those who teleworked every day of the week thus fell, to 34% of teleworkers (i.e. 9% of all employees), after 39% in December and 44% in November (respectively 10% and 12% ).

This drop in teleworking throughout the week has been made in favor of teleworking between two and four days a week, the share of which increases by 4 points over one month, or 47% of teleworkers (12% of all employees), or teleworking one day a week (+2 points).

The proportion of employees who telework occasionally, a few days or half-days during the month, is stable (7% of teleworkers).
