Patrick Pelata: "Only manufacturers who generate enough cash will be able to follow"

INTERVIEW - The former CEO of Renault analyzes the transition from the automotive sector to the electric era as a major transformation with "blows to be taken and opportunities to be seized".


Patrick Pélata, Managing Director of Renault until April 2011, now heads Meta Consulting, a strategy firm on the transformation of mobility.

- How quickly should electric vehicles replace diesel and gasoline to meet the thresholds set by Brussels?

Patrick PÉLATA.

If Europe wants to achieve zero C02 emissions as planned by 2050, the entire fleet must be replaced, which generally takes a little over ten years.

We should therefore be able to sell 100% of electric vehicles in 2040 and between 40 to 50% in 2030. In 2020 we are at around 10%.

Are all car manufacturers capable of transforming their activity within these deadlines?

In any transformation of this magnitude, there are hits to be taken and opportunities to be seized.

If we look at the ranking of the market capitalizations of car manufacturers, Tesla is three times better valued than Toyota, Stellantis is 10th and Renault
