Brexit torpedoes British exports: "At least 50 percent of trucks are empty"

Many companies in the UK have largely stopped their EU business since the beginning of the year. Customs controls are too time-consuming. The head of the freight forwarders' association warns: German exporters will soon be threatened with something similar.

Trucks are waiting to enter the port of Dover: You don't see queues like here in December at the moment, but other problems threaten

Where is the feared Brexit chaos?

In any case, Dover doesn't look too messy.

Even if convoys of trucks jam in front of checkpoints or ships leave with a delay, things are generally orderly at Great Britain's most important English Channel port - almost two months after the UK left the internal market and the EU customs union.

The government in London is already talking about a "return to normal".

But the appearance would be deceptive, says Richard Burnett, head of the British Transport Association.

In fact, the implementation of Brexit causes enormous damage and costs: not only for his industry, but also for many British exporters.

And now EU companies with UK business are facing a similar problem, warns Burnett.

SPIEGEL:

Mr. Burnett, the EU's customs controls began on January 1st.

Imports of goods from the UK must be declared to customs.

But before Dover and the Eurotunnel, the feared mile-long truck traffic jams have not yet materialized.

Was it all just scare-mongering?
