"Intel totally disagrees with the verdict rendered by the jury today,"

a spokesperson told AFP.

“We intend to appeal and are confident that we will win,”

he added.

The patents belong to VLSI Technology, which filed a lawsuit against Intel in November 2019 in a Texas court.

Willful violation

"Intel has continued to deliberately violate (the patent) in a malicious and shocking manner, without any consideration for the rights of VLSI,"

its lawyers wrote at the time.

The company did not immediately respond to AFP's solicitation.

The patents concerned previously belonged to NPX Semiconductors.

This company should receive part of the fine, if it is actually paid after the appeals, according to Dennis Crouch, a law professor at the University of Missouri.
