Project against shop dying due to Corona: Whoever opens a shop in Hameln stays rent

First online trading, then the pandemic: the pedestrian zones are threatened with extinction. In the Lower Saxony city of Hameln, the mayor is now using unusual means to counter this.

Hamelin on a day at the end of February.

The seven-day incidence is 39.7.

The shops in the historic old town with its pretty half-timbered houses are closed.

Many shop windows are dark.

»Light doesn't just attract mosquitos«, says Jens Laparose, who takes telephone orders in his clothing store in the mornings.

Laparose stands next to the sales counter and looks over at the dolls in the shop window wearing pajamas and lingerie.

"If only a few shops stay dark during the winter," says the businessman, "then nobody can come to this shopping street."

Jens Laparose runs the Warnecke department store in downtown Hamelin, a specialist shop for women's clothing.

A shop in A-location, right next to the historic “wedding house”, where the figure of the Pied Piper of Hameln appears every day to the glockenspiel on the gable.

In normal times, the pied piper attracts thousands of tourists every day.
