New York Attorney General Leticia James suggests investors be "very careful" when buying cryptocurrencies, and note that they are not trying to defraud them, given the recent rise in the price of bitcoin.

The value of Bitcoin crossed the $ 50,000 mark this year, and the increase was driven in part by the fact that institutional investors and companies purchased the currency.

Software development company MicroStrategy, which last summer acquired about $ 425 million in bitcoin, announced Monday that it had purchased the currency for another $ 15 million, at an average price of $ 45,710 per unit.

Earlier this year, electric car company Tesla announced it had invested $ 1.5 billion in buying Bitcoin.

The growing interest in cryptocurrencies, and recent rally in the value of Bitcoin, has increased the number of "bad players" - those who may use Bitcoin for fraudulent activities and schemes to deceive investors - the New York State Attorney's Office said.

The firm also warned stockbrokers, traders, salespeople and investment advisers that they must register with the Office of Investor Protection, a firm subordinate to the New York Attorney General's Office.

Last month, the attorney general sued an illegal cryptocurrency trading platform that she allegedly stole from investors more than $ 1 million.

The firm recently completed an investigation that lasted nearly two years regarding the finances and corporate procedures of the companies operating the Bitfinex crypto currency exchange.
