SNCF proposes to calculate the carbon footprint of its trips

A clever way to promote rail transport because, on this ecological criterion, it is a winner every time.


It is a blue cartridge added Thursday to the OUI.sncf site.

This comparator allows you to quickly calculate the carbon footprint of a trip depending on the mode of transport you choose.

A Paris-Montpellier for example.

In a private car, 147.3 kg of CO2 are emitted;

81 kg by plane, 67.1 kg by carpooling;

26.7 kg by Macron bus… and only 1.6 kg by train.

Nearly 50% of French people say they are not sufficiently informed to make choices in terms of responsible consumption

," explains Christophe Fanichet, CEO of SNCF Voyageurs.

We decided to give them a tool to help them on their journey.

To avoid being accused of making pro domo plea, SNCF uses data from Ademe, the ecological transition agency.

The site also shows the journey time depending on the mode of transport.

Currently, this comparison tool works for around sixty high-demand journeys (TGV or TER) which represent a third of OUI.sncf sales.

The old railway lady needs to advertise: the pandemic has reduced travel and anchored the idea that public transport is a place of Covid-19 contamination.

Result, despite many low prices, the trains do not fill up.

During the February holidays, attendance was down 40%, at Christmas by 30% and last summer by 15%.

For this reason, since the beginning of January, the SNCF has only been running three TGVs out of four.
