The US Commerce Department said today that the trade deficit increased last January, with imports of goods registering a jump to record levels.
Reuters quoted the ministry as saying in a statement that "the trade deficit rose 1.9 percent to 68.2 billion dollars for the month of January."
Goods imports rose 1.6 percent to $ 221.1 billion, the highest on record, and consumer spending increased by the most in seven months in January, supported by government payments to low-income families as part of a nearly $ 900 billion coronavirus relief package.
Merchandise exports registered an increase of 1.6 percent to 135.7 billion dollars.
