The Paris court dismissed Current Values, which had summoned the Council for Journalistic Ethics and Mediation (CDJM), author of an unfavorable opinion on an article in the weekly representing the deputy LFI Danièle Obono as a slave, a- we learned on Friday.

The ultraconservative magazine had attacked this independent body for "

infringing the presumption of innocence

" after the publication in November of a CDJM opinion which considered the article of Valeurs Actuelles "

contrary

 " to "

journalistic ethics

 ".

Valeurs Actuelles had published in August 2020 a story of seven pages of "

political fiction

", in which the deputy Danièle Obono, with black skin, "

experiments the responsibility of Africans in the horrors of slavery

" in the eighteenth century, according to her presentation by the magazine.

Drawings by Danièle Obono, iron necklace around the neck, accompanied the article.

By placing Danièle Obono "

in a degrading situation

", the story of Current Values "

does not respect human dignity and is likely to feed prejudices

", estimated the CDJM, seized by a reader.

Already targeted by a preliminary investigation by the Paris prosecutor's office for “

racist insults

” and by a complaint from the deputy, the weekly considered that the CDJM's opinion “

publicly

 ”

affirmed

the “

conviction of his guilt

 ”.

He demanded its withdrawal.

But for the Paris court, the CDJM's analysis “

cannot be

 ” assimilated to “

a peremptory declaration of guilt by Erik Monjalous

”, the publication director of the weekly newspaper, according to the summary order issued Thursday.

Erik Monjalous was thus rejected of his requests and ordered to pay 2,000 euros to the CDJM.

The weekly reflects on the follow-up to be given to the court's decision

"

This is good news for press freedom and for democracy

", reacted the president of the CDJM, Patrick Eveno.

"

This is also very good news for the CDJM because it will silence some opposition,

" he added, while the union of magazine press editors (SEPM) supported Valeurs present in this dispute.

For its part, the weekly is considering the follow-up to be given to the court's decision, said deputy editor-in-chief, Tugdual Denis.

"

We recognize absolutely no legitimacy

" to the CDJM, he added.

The CDJM was founded in December 2019 by journalists, media and representatives of the public after years of debates on the usefulness of such a body, and despite the refusal of many press editors and editorial staff to join.

On the model of similar institutions in Europe, it wants to serve as a mediator or arbiter between the public, the media and the editorial staff to help bridge the mistrust between journalists and citizens.
