A region plagued by attacks

Armed jihadists, known as Al-Shabab ("

" in Arabic) who pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group in 2019, have been carrying out bloody attacks for more than three years in this poor but strategic.

The predominantly Muslim province of Cabo Delgado is rich in natural gas.
