Deutsche Bahn is buying even more electricity from the wind farm off Heligoland

Every fourth wind turbine on the Amrumbank off Heligoland will turn for Deutsche Bahn in the future. RWE plans to deliver 450 gigawatt hours of green electricity annually to the railways from 2025.

Deutsche Bahn needs ten terawatt hours of electricity per year, which corresponds to the annual requirements of all Hamburg residents.

Because the railway wants to position itself as a climate-friendly alternative to cars and airplanes, the railway managers are currently putting a lot of effort into getting green electricity.

The state-owned company has now signed a contract with RWE for the delivery of an additional 190 gigawatt hours from the Amrumbank-West offshore wind farm.

"This amount alone corresponds to the need for almost six days of electrical rail operation throughout Germany," said DB energy manager Torsten Schein from the AFP news agency.

This would save up to 153,000 tons of CO₂ annually.

At the end of 2020, DB had already signed three contracts with energy groups for the delivery of a total of 780 gigawatt hours of green electricity from hydro, wind and solar power.

The deal also included a contract with RWE for the delivery of more than 260 gigawatt hours of green electricity annually from the wind farm off Heligoland.

The new contract for the additional 190 gigawatt hours will run for 15 years from 2025.

Every fourth wind turbine on the Amrumbank off Heligoland will then turn for Deutsche Bahn.

100 percent green electricity by 2038

"Power Purchase Agreements" (PPA) are long-term electricity contracts between producer and buyer;

They are intended to reduce price risks, especially with large investments in the construction or continued operation of renewable energy systems.

"DB is advancing the still young German PPA market," said Schein.

"Our consistent path to 100 percent green electricity contributes to the further development of the market for renewable energies in this country." Hydropower has proven itself in the railways for over a hundred years.

The group sees great potential for expansion in solar and wind power.

Today, 61 percent of the electricity required by the railways comes from sustainable sources, the group calculates.

In 2030, the share of green electricity should be 80 percent, in 2038 100 percent.
