Deodorant, shampoo, scrub ... the tip of homemade beauty products

2021-04-22T12:52:45.405Z

Making your body balm or shower gel is both environmentally friendly and very economical. And don't worry: it's not so

With the Covid-19 crisis, the hygiene and beauty market took a hit. Between confinements, teleworking and the closure of social spaces, the French took less care of their bodies. The numbers prove it. According to a study by Kantar, spending on beauty products fell by 5.4% (in value) in 2020. But if there is one trend that has resisted the Covid, it is that of organic and natural (+ 4.5 points of market share compared to 2016). Do-it-yourself products are also popular. In fact, one in ten French people already say they are making it. And for good reason: "It's both ecological and good for the wallet," recalls Caroline Vivant, the co-founder of the Lekaba.fr site, whose objective is to offer consumers eco-responsible alternatives according to several criteria, including that of the budget. .

There is obviously a “health” advantage to indulging in homemade: “We know the ingredients we use to make our day cream or deodorant whereas when we buy them, even if the composition is displayed, we Often does not understand much, ”she laments. There is of course also an environmental aspect since these items bought in stores are "often over-packaged", she adds. But above all, the savings are far from negligible. According to calculations carried out by LeKaba.fr, based on the recipes offered on their site, a solid shampoo (70 g) homemade would cost 3.34 euros, where it will cost more than 9 euros to buy two bottles. organic Lea Nature 250 ml (equivalent to a solid shampoo) at Carrefour. For the deodorant too, the cost is divided by three,or 1.20 euros for homemade versus 3.47 euros for Mon Savon Bio vanille, still at Carrefour.

To these savings, we must also add the anti-waste aspect of some homemade cosmetics such as the scrub where it is sufficient to recover coffee grounds in the filter of the coffee maker or the capsules before mixing it with coconut oil. Result: 1.20 euros for 100 g where the 75 ml tube of the Le petit Olivier brand costs 5 euros at Carrefour. For the necessary ingredients, "there is a common base of 3/4 of products to buy such as beeswax, vegetable oil to be taken rather from the kitchen department, it is less expensive", underlines Laetitia CrnKovic which runs eco-responsible workshops and has just published a guide (

"I make my cosmetics and solid household products", Larousse, 7.95 euros

).

Just on beauty products, it spends less than 40 euros a year on ingredients to make a total of "four toothpastes, as many deodorants, soaps and shampoos as well as two body balms", lists t -it.

Efficient recipes but ...

But is it easy to do?

“Personally, it takes me one afternoon twice a year,” says Laetitia CrnKovic.

But some homemade cosmetics are more complicated than others to carry out, recognizes Caroline Vivant: “The exfoliation, as we have seen, is very simple.

The face mask too.

But the body balm and shampoo are more technical, ”she says.

And is it effective?

“Since I made my own shampoo, I no longer need conditioner or treatment.

It therefore also helps to reduce the bill on that side, ”announces Laëtitia CrnKovic.

The cofounder of the lekaba.fr site is more nuanced: “It sometimes takes time to adapt to properly control the dosages.

And sometimes you also have to take a little on yourself.

For example, you may have to wait two to three weeks for your hair, which was used to industrial products, to change to a homemade solid shampoo.

It can be a bit unsettling at first ”.

Moreover, Caroline Vivant prefers not to make her own shampoo. "The idea is not to do everything but at least to get into this homemade process or - for those who prefer to buy - to try the experiment with solid cosmetics", she says. . Because in addition to the ecological aspect, here too, the savings are real due to a longer period of use. And to quote in particular the solid shampoo Secrets de Provence at 5.70 euros "which lasts several months", or the Clémence and Vivien deodorant balm at the price of 7.90 euros "but which will be used for a quarter".
