Reality and fiction seem to come together in the outfit worn by Thomas Pesquet during his take off this Friday aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule.
Gone are the “

”
suits
of the first astronauts: the cut is now adjusted, the design and uncluttered helmet and large black boots, with cavalry airs, finish refining the silhouette of these latest generation cosmonauts.

At the origin of this combination, the Hollywood costume designer Jose Fernandez.
Batman vs Superman, Tron, Ironman 2, The Amazing Spiderman and Captain America, to name a few of his accomplishments: the creator, at the head of the Ironhead studio, is a regular behind the scenes of Hollywood, Marvel and their superheroes.
"I thought it was for a movie"
The costume designer was approached by SpaceX in 2016 to participate in a design competition.
At first, the creator did not think that this call for projects was organized for a real astronaut outfit: "
I did not know SpaceX and I thought it was for a film
" tells the famous costume designer to Forbes.
Elon Musk, the successful entrepreneur, founding leader of Space X, fell in love with the design of the helmet.
Obviously, while being faithful to the design, it was necessary to go through an engineering phase and adapt the helmet to the specifications of space equipment.
The result is evocative and draws its inspiration from firefighter gear with its sleek and protective visor which, when lowered, is reminiscent of that of Kier Duella in
2001,
Stanley Kubrick's A
Space Odyssey
.
We also find in the helmets imagined by Fernandez those, emblematic, Daft Punks.
Elon Musk wanted a "tuxedo"
The close-fitting outfit prevents astronauts from spending too much energy moving around in heavy and bulky equipment.
And this comfort is combined with elegance;
this is even part of the specifications: Elon Musk wanted a "
tuxedo
"
for his cosmonauts,
Fernandez tells the Bleep site.
"
Anyone is better in a tuxedo, no matter their size or shape,
" the SpaceX executive told Fernandez, before adding that the astronauts should be "
more beautiful with their outfit than without, like with a tuxedo.
".
The cinemas closed, Marvel fans were therefore able to console themselves this Friday, admiring the outfits of Thomas Pesquet and his three teammates, during takeoff to the International Space Station.
