The Stuttgart sports car manufacturer Porsche wants to set up its own factory to manufacture battery cells for electric cars.

“Battery cells are a core technology for the German automotive industry that we must have in our own country.

In development and in production.

Porsche wants to play a pioneering role in this, ”said Porsche CEO Oliver Blume of the“ Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung ”.

High-performance cells from the Ländle?

The Porsche battery cell factory is to be built in the Swabian town of Tübingen - “because we want to show,” says the manager, “that we can manufacture battery cells in a high-wage country like Baden-Württemberg.” So far, European car manufacturers have often relied on battery suppliers from Asia.

It is true that Porsche will also obtain batteries from its owner, the Volkswagen Group.

"But there will also be a segment for high-performance cells," said Blume.

"Just as we developed high-performance combustion engines, we now want to be at the forefront of high-performance batteries."

For the people of Stuttgart, electric cars are becoming more and more important.

Manager Blume expects that by the end of the decade 80 percent of Porsche sales will be made up of vehicles with electric or partially electric drives.

The battery-electric sports car Taycan, which has been built since 2019, is now selling almost as well as the traditional 911 model with a combustion engine.

His company is gaining many new customers with this electric sports car, said the Porsche boss of the FAS
