The past year has changed world orders.

You will hardly find an area in our lives that has not been affected by the corona and of course this is especially true for the job market.

After all, that world did not stop advancing for a moment and therefore, when we finish our studies and enter the circle of work, it is important for us and employers to know that we are "in business" and that the time and effort we invested in studies was not in vain, but also provided us with tools.

In the past year, the changes in the world of work have stood out in a variety of ways, which also existed before, but perhaps we paid less attention to.

like what?

The ability to work remotely, alone or in a team, and continue to deliver products and solve complex problems even when the work environment changes.

What features is the modern employer looking for?

We were all required to make adjustments and those who succeeded well were those who knew how to demonstrate creativity, thinking outside the box, perceptual flexibility and spatial vision, and no less importantly - to learn for themselves. Take a subject they are unfamiliar with, understand its main points and extract from it what they need in order to advance in their work.

These are the workers the market is looking for today. Those who know how to add value and have a wide set of abilities, do not freeze when the situation becomes dynamic, know how to continue to be diligent and curious and understand how the modern world works.

These tools can and should be received already during the study period, because what is absorbed and assimilated there, will also pass on with the student, when he becomes an employee. The passion built into him for the profession he is learning will push him along the way and help him achieve and establish qualities like critical thinking, systemic vision and the ability to solve new problems.

But how do you do that?

Afeka College educates the engineers of the future with the help of an innovative learning method.

An engineer is a position with great responsibility and requires professional ethics and social involvement and in the modern world, his role is to harness his abilities and engineering for the benefit of society and the environment.

Therefore, he must be up to date with technological developments and have the capacity for independent thinking and breaking conventions.

Emphasis on unconventional practical learning

At Afeka College, emphasis is placed on unconventional practical learning, which prepares engineers for the transition to the world of work and is based on projects that allow students to experience their future work environments in real time and integrate into them during their studies. They research real problems and identify real needs in companies, go out into the field and solve challenges.

The same challenges do not appear to students only in the "routine" places and so for example, led by Prof. Vered Aaronson, a certified skipper and senior lecturer at the college, a sailing course was opened last year. The marine experiences open up new lines of thought for students, in directions they were not familiar with until now. Another interesting example is the collaboration with "Eilat-Eilot: Renewable Energy", in which students get to know the world of eco-tech with the hope that in the future they will advance it with the knowledge and abilities they accumulate.

Every year, Afeka hosts an exhibition of final projects, to which senior figures from the industry and the high-tech world are invited, in order to be exposed to the work and get to know the engineers of tomorrow closely.

Among the projects presented in recent years can be found a brainwave-based system for children with disabilities, an alert for electric bike riders, a training system for stability and balance for surfers and more.

Who is the engineer in 2021

To ensure that this successful connection between academia and industry will not be harmed in any situation, Afeka has prepared for every possible scenario and closure and provides an opportunity for distance learning with the help of innovative equipment found in the classrooms. Routinely, students enjoy special learning spaces, including advanced lab building and experience and practice interns.

These days we are all trying to get out of the corona crisis and start getting back to routine, and employment opportunities are not similar to those we knew and require new lines of thought. Every employer is faced with a variety of job seekers and those who will achieve the coveted jobs are the ones who will demonstrate their abilities in the most appropriate way, and see how they combine essential skills for the job, and quick learning ability and knowledge, helping them create a positive and immediate workplace impact.

An engineer in 2021 should have extensive scientific knowledge of course, but also possess a sense of entrepreneurship and creativity, which helps him turn theory into practice in the modern job market.

The education process of Afeka College proceeds from this premise and provides future engineers with a cushion for developing the critical skills for them.

Not for nothing is the college's motto: "Engineers. Not robots."

The goal is not only to act, but also to educate engineers who will lead and lead the company for change and improvement.
