The fashion designer Alber Elbaz died at the age of 59.
Elbaz died of the consequences of a Covid 19 disease, as the luxury goods company Richemont announced.
Elbaz worked for 14 years as chief designer for the Lanvin fashion house and led the outdated brand to new fame.
His designs made him the darling of Hollywood stars like Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman and Sienna Miller, Meryl Streep made headlines at the Academy Awards in a long gold-colored gown he designed.
"He brought out women," wrote fashion journalist Suzy Menkes on Instagram.
For AZ Factory, Elbaz recently designed fashion for all age groups and every figure, from size XXS to 4XL and at prices from 210 euros - a revolution in the world of haute couture.
Born in Morocco, Elbaz began his career with US fashion designer Geoffrey Beene in New York before he was hired by Guy Laroche.
In 1998 he succeeded Yves Saint-Laurent in his prêt-à-porter line before moving to Lanvin in 2001.
He breathed new life into the oldest French fashion house, founded in 1889.
"Thanks Alber," it said on Lanvin's Instagram account.
"He brought the 'Sleeping Beauty' back to life and honored the great Jeanne Lanvin," said the former French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang.
Lanvin is now considered the oldest fashion house in France.
