Unemployment down slightly in the first quarter

3,560,600 unemployed job seekers were registered with Pôle emploi in metropolitan France in the first quarter of 2021, according to data released on Tuesday by the Ministry of Labor.

This is 12,200 less (-0.3%) over a quarter, but 6.8% more than a year ago.

The number of registrants with a reduced activity (categories B and C) increased slightly (+ 0.4% over the quarter), so that in the end, all categories combined, the number of job seekers remained stable over the quarter (+4,700), up 4.9% over one year.

If we include the overseas departments, excluding Mayotte, the trends are the same with a quarterly drop of 0.4% but an annual increase of 6.3% for category A alone and, for the whole. categories, a stable quarter, with an increase of 4.7% over one year.

The latest quarterly results published at the end of January showed in the fourth quarter of 2020 a decrease in the number of unemployed in category A of 2.7% compared to the previous quarter.

For 2020, under the effect of the Covid-19 crisis, the increase in the number of unemployed reached 7.5%, with 265,400 additional registrants in the 4th quarter of 2020 compared to the 4th quarter of 2019.
