Currently, one tonne of CO₂ emissions from fossil fuels costs 25 euros.

If the CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt has his way, this price should rise to 45 euros in 2022 and not in 2024.

This means that the two increases planned for 2023 and 2024 should be eliminated, said Dobrindt with a view to the planned reform of climate legislation.

For 2030, the Union is aiming for a greenhouse gas savings target of 65 instead of 55 percent compared to 1990.

Dobrindt wants to achieve climate neutrality by 2045 - the Bavarian government spoke of 2040 on Monday.

Dobrindt also announced new intermediate CO₂ targets.

So one wants to name climate targets for 2035 and 2040 according to the stipulations of the Federal Constitutional Court.

In 2035, no more new cars with combustion engines powered by fossil fuels should be registered.

For the coming legislative period, he could imagine that the surcharge of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) could be omitted and that the electricity tax could be reduced significantly, said Dobrindt.

He himself thinks it is possible that there could be an earlier coal exit than 2038.

But he respects that there is currently little willingness to bring the exit date forward, he said in response to a question about the state elections in the coal state of Saxony-Anhalt on June 6th.
