The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) announced today that global food prices rose in April to their highest levels since 2014.

Reuters quoted the organization as saying in a statement that "global food prices rose for the eleventh month in a row during last April, registering their highest levels since May 2014, as sugar led a rise in all major indicators."

The FAO Food Price Index, which measures the monthly changes of a basket of grains, oilseeds, dairy products, meat and sugar, scored 120.9 points on average last month, compared to an adjusted reading of 118.9 points in March.

The organization indicated that the new forecasts indicate a growth in the production of both wheat and corn globally in the next season.
