Calm, greenery, dynamic labor market and reduced cost of living: after more than a year of health crisis, medium-sized cities have their revenge.

The HelloWork barometer, integrating the RegionsJob and ParisJob platforms which published nearly one million job offers during the first quarter, attests to this.

“For the first time, the weight of metropolitan areas in the volume of CDD and CDI offers is decreasing”.

If the latter concentrated 36% of offers in the first months of 2020, they only represent 33% of hiring proposals in 2021.

At the same time, the 10 most dynamic medium-sized cities now account for 7% of offers, against 5% in 2020, a volume equivalent to that of Lyon Métropole (Rhône).

"More and more candidates aspire to live in a less urban environment", analyzes David Beaurepaire, deputy director of HelloWork.

To attract these city dwellers in need of space, Vannes (Morbihan), Dijon (Côte-d'Or), Besançon (Doubs) or Annecy (Haute-Savoie) can boast of the good health of their labor market.

The most represented region, the Pays de la Loire has three agglomerations in the top 10: La Roche-sur-Yon (Vendée), Cholet and Angers (Maine-et-Loire) rank first, third and eighth respectively.

"The local economic fabric explains this dynamism," explains David Beaurepaire.

The unemployment rate is relatively low there, certain industries providing jobs, as well in CDD, CDI as temporary, are established in the region.

The attraction for the Atlantic coast also favors sectors such as real estate and construction.

The dream of the inhabitants of Ile-de-France

More and more people in Ile-de-France want to go elsewhere.

In its survey published in September 2020, based on the offers viewed by 3.1 million users of its platforms, HelloWork noted that 42% of them were only interested in jobs to be filled in another region than theirs.

At the same time, 24% were exclusively examining proposals based in Ile-de-France.

“The proportion of Ile-de-France residents who consult offers outside their region is increasing compared to 2019,” notes David Beaurepaire.

Brittany, Hauts-de-France and Pays de la Loire are the areas that attract them the most.

The regions of the West are also managing to retain their working people: only 14% of the inhabitants of the Pays de la Loire and 13% of Bretons were looking for work only outside their region of residence.

"The metropolises of Rennes, Nantes and Brest are among the most attractive according to their inhabitants," said the deputy director of HelloWork.

Rennes ranks first metropolis for its general quality of life while Nantes convinces for its economic dynamism and its cultural and leisure offer.

"

Rennes or Nantes, cities within easy reach of the TGV from the capital for any “commuter”, these hybrid employees who share their working time between home and office.

You only have to walk the corridors of Parisian public transport, where the advertising campaigns of the cities and other provincial territories follow one another, to convince yourself that the process of seduction is underway.

Some Ile-de-France residents have already taken the plunge.

While waiting between two subways, others think very hard.
