French farmers are bearing the brunt of the soaring price of agricultural raw materials.
For the past few months, corn, wheat, barley and soybeans have been selling for gold.
Their price has climbed 30% on average.
Exceptionally, "
the price of corn has even exceeded by 40 euros that of wheat, intended for human consumption
", notes Benjamin Beaudart, analyst at Agritel.
This is good news for grain farmers, who can hope to sell their future harvest at a good price - if the weather doesn't play a trick on them.
But the surge in prices is a disaster for pastoralists, who use cereals and vegetable proteins to feed their cattle.

Animal feed is a major expense item for breeders.
It represents 60% to 70% of production costs for poultry and pork respectively.
It is a little less for cattle and dairy breeders, who can supplement the diet of their animals with fodder.
