Director of Consumer Protection at the Ministry of Internal Trade Walid Al-Ayesh confirmed the decrease in the total number of organized seizures against violators, especially with regard to grave violations in a “significant and influential” manner, after the issuance of Legislative Decree No. “8” for the year 2021 containing the new consumer protection law.

Serious violations are any violation that could harm the health of the consumer or aim to mislead and cheat him about the nature of the “food or non-food” substance, whether by announcing incorrect information that is not commensurate with the nature of the substance “or placing a fake label or a picture that is not related to the components or uses of the substance.” Or it contained substances in proportions that exceeded the permissible limits by a large percentage, or their presence was not allowed within the substance, or one of its basic components decreased by a large percentage, or phrases indicating that it was curative without the approval of the Ministry of Health.

Al-Ayesh explained that through comparison, the number of seizures organized for serious violations between the period from 3-15 to 4-14-2021, i.e., a month before the decree was issued, amounted to “1263”, while it did not exceed during the period from 4-15 to 15-5-2021 about “595”, which means a very large decrease, although the application of the provisions of the decree is still at the beginning.

Al-Ayesh pointed out that the decrease is a clear indicator to achieve the goal for which the decree was issued by applying deterrent penalties against violators, expecting the percentage to decrease further in the coming period, as these penalties include fines from 300,000 pounds to 10 million pounds and imprisonment from one month to seven years, according to The type and severity of the violation committed, especially violations related to trafficking in state-supported materials and goods sold through electronic cards, fraud, forgery, corrupt or expired materials, and every violation related to the health and safety of citizens.

Seizures organized for serious violations, according to the latest statistical report during the period from 3-15 to 14-4, were distributed between 59 violations of unknown origin, 70 violations related to fraud in merchandise, 505 judicial arrests against bakeries, 531 seizures of state-supported materials “supply flour, bread and fuels” and 9 Violations of trafficking in relief materials and 89 for expired materials.

While the seizures were distributed between 4-15 and 15-5 for 38 violations of unknown origin, 58 violations of goods, 145 violations related to ovens, 281 violations of state-supported materials “supply flour, bread and fuels”, 8 violations of trafficking in relief materials, and 65 violations of expired materials. .

Al-Ayesh stressed that the ministry follows up around the clock the work of the Consumer Protection Agency and receives complaints from citizens through the phones designated for this in the governorates, which contributes to accessing safe and healthy markets.
