The falling corona incidence values are alleviating the existential fears of companies, according to a recent survey. Nevertheless, short-time work benefits and bridging allowances are to be extended.

With the corona crisis subsiding, fewer and fewer companies in Germany see their very existence threatened.

This is the result of a survey by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) among a good 1,500 companies.

The share of these companies fell from 13 to eight percent in May.

"The incidence values are easing in many places, while private companies in Germany are also looking more optimistically into the future again," said IAB Director Bernd Fitzenberger.

Small businesses in particular with up to nine employees report significantly less fear of existence.

The positive development is also noticeable when creating new jobs.

Overall, the number of hires in May exceeded the number of layoffs in 14 percent of the companies.

Even if the prospects improve, the state corona aid payments should initially continue: The federal cabinet decided on Wednesday to extend the short-time working rules. According to this, the state will reimburse all social security contributions for short-time working beyond June 30th. From October, half of the contributions will be paid if the short-time work was started by September 30th. In addition, it should still be sufficient for the registration of short-time work if at least ten percent of employees are affected and not a third, as is otherwise the case.

With the extension, the Ministry of Labor intends to »stabilize employment relationships beyond June 30, 2021 and thereby avoid unemployment and, if possible, bankruptcies«. Companies in the hospitality industry that were more likely to lay off rather than stop in May should benefit from this. According to IAB Vice Director Ulrich Walwei, this could be due to the fact that the companies were holding back due to the ongoing uncertainty.

The economic aid for companies is also expected to be extended until the end of September. This was reported by the Reuters news agency, citing inside information. So far, the so-called bridging aid III was set up until the end of June. This means that companies that can demonstrate a drop in sales due to the corona pandemic can now continue to receive reimbursement for large parts of their fixed costs.

"In addition, incentives are created so that companies open again quickly," the agency quoted from government circles.

"For example, companies should receive personnel cost aid if they take employees out of the short-time work allowance earlier or hire new employees." Solo self-employed people such as artists, city guides or language teachers should also receive additional help: the so-called restart aid should go from 7500 euros to 12,000 euros increase.
