In view of the exploding demand for electric cars, the Volkswagen brand management decided on Monday to take an unusual step: From this week on, the automaker’s more than 18,000 executives will temporarily no longer be able to order battery-only vehicles as company cars.

If you need a new vehicle, you should either order a plug-in hybrid or a conventional combustion engine instead.

The electric car production is currently running at full load, according to an internal letter from the company to company car owners.

"This is why the delivery times of our vehicles are currently significantly longer." The range of electrified company cars must therefore be limited until the fourth quarter.

It was only in August 2020 that the group asked its managers to select company cars that were as CO2-friendly as possible.

Anyone who nevertheless ordered a gasoline, diesel or hybrid vehicle had to pay 15 euros per month as compensation.

VW is now also suspending this “CO2 compensation contribution” until further notice.

The company points out that more than 7,000 company cars have already been electrified.

The statutory CO2 target for this fleet will therefore definitely be achieved in 2021.

On the intranet, VW also emphasized how much demand for its battery vehicles is currently.

The E-Auto ID.3 has meanwhile been ordered 100,000 times.

In Germany alone, a total of more than 55,000 customers had ordered the ID.3 and ID.4 models by the end of May.

In Sweden, the ID.4 electric SUV was once again the best-selling electric car in May.
