After the forced landing of a passenger plane in the Belarusian capital Minsk, Lufthansa continues to fly around the airspace over the former Soviet republic.

"Up to and including June 20, all airlines in the Lufthansa Group will not fly to Minsk and avoid Belarusian airspace," said a Lufthansa Cargo spokeswoman.

How to proceed after that will be decided in the coming days.

The Lufthansa Group set this period at the end of May after Belarus forced a Ryanair plane to land in Minsk with a fighter jet and the following arrest of the opposition blogger Roman Protassewitsch and his girlfriend, the spokeswoman said.

Shortly before it expires, new discussions will be given and, depending on the situation, an assessment will be made of whether the measures will be extended or canceled.

After the events at the end of May, the EU asked European airlines to avoid the airspace over Belarus.

Belarusian airlines have been banned from flying into EU airspace since last weekend.

In addition to Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cargo, the Lufthansa Group also includes Swiss and Eurowings.

At the end of May, Minsk Airport also reported that it had received a written terror threat against a Lufthansa flight.

The actions are supposed to bring about the "destruction of Lukashenko's unlawful regime".

Shortly after the warning, the federal police stopped boarding and examined the passengers and the machine in detail, but found no abnormalities.
