The Californian group unveiled a new option on Wednesday, called "Admin Assist", which allows those in charge to determine with criteria what is acceptable or not on the group, and to automatically check potentially problematic content and comments. Administrators can also use the tools to remove messages with links to unwanted content, to slow down overly animated conversations or to impose a minimum period of time on Facebook or in a given group for users to be able to participate in conversations.

"These options automate things that administrators did manually before,"

Tom Alison, a vice president of the company, told AFP.

The platform has taken many measures for years to clean up exchanges and try to eradicate content that violates its regulations, from incitement to violence, disinformation and racism.

Facebook groups, for the most part non-public, are seen as the last bastions where extremist insults and opinions run the risk of fuse without restraint, even if they are initially formed around common passions and interests (music, parents from the same neighborhood , etc).

“Some of these groups have millions of people,”

notes Tom Alison.

According to him, more than 1.8 billion people use it every month, under the offices of 70 million administrators.

Spotting conversations about to escalate

Thanks to artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, Facebook's automated systems are already scanning group discussions to remove infringements.

The social media giant is also testing AI tools that will have to identify conversations about to degenerate, when the pace of responses accelerates for example, and warn moderators.

“Some directors enjoy the debate, others don't,”

notes Tom Alison.
