Significantly more solar systems will work on Berlin's house roofs in the future.
The House of Representatives has therefore passed the so-called Solar Law Berlin with its red-red-green majority against the votes of the opposition.
It applies from January 2023 and obliges private owners to install and operate a photovoltaic system for new buildings and roof renovations.
Alternatively, a system on a facade is also possible.
The expansion of solar power is to be accelerated significantly, and energy generation to be more climate-friendly.
The aim of the Senate Administration is to increase the proportion of solar power in the city's electricity requirement to 25 percent as quickly as possible.
There is considerable potential on the roofs of Berlin that has so far only been used to a small extent, it said.
The expansion of solar energy in Berlin also creates future-proof jobs, especially in the areas of planning and craft.
There was criticism not only from the opposition, but also from the construction community.
Managing Director Manja Schreiner warned that the law threatens to become a brake, especially in the renovation sector.
Owners could be put off by it and postpone renovations.
