The Prime Minister, Engineer Hussein Arnous, approved the recommendation of the Economic Committee to allow the import of ginned cotton for the public sector and industrialists only, according to their actual production capacity, for a period of six months.

The recommendation, which came on the basis of the proposal of the Ministries of Economy, Foreign Trade and Industry, allowed industrialists to import cotton threads in an amount of only 5,000 tons, according to the decision of the Ministry of Economy and Foreign Trade No. 192 of 2014 and according to lists provided by the Ministry of Industry, provided that the last shipment arrives before 12/31/2021.

Assistant Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Bassam Haidar indicated in a statement to SANA that the decision to allow the import of cotton and cotton threads meets the industrialists’ need for raw materials to operate their factories according to their actual production capacity, pointing out that the proposal was in coordination between the ministries of economy, agriculture and industry due to their expectations that this cotton crop would be insufficient. General needs of local factories and factories.

On the other hand, the Director of the General Corporation for Textile Industries, Engineer Harith Makhlouf, confirmed that the Corporation supported the industrialists’ demands to import cotton threads for this year only due to the inability of the corporation’s spinning companies to secure the needs of the public and private sectors due to the lack of cotton supplied to these companies from the Cotton Ginning and Marketing Corporation.

Makhlouf explained that the Corporation had determined the actual needs of cotton yarn for industrialists and determined the quantities that it could not supply them with, and the approval of importing them had been approved in order to ensure the continued rotation of the production wheel.

In a similar statement, the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Aleppo Chamber of Industry, Mustafa Kawaih, described the decision as correct, and it is in response to the demands of the industrialists, which they announced at the first forum for the textile industries, which was held late last year regarding the provision of ginned cotton and cotton threads, and enabling them during the remaining months of the year to secure their needs to meet the market need. local.

Kawaih expressed his hope that the next cotton season will be abundant, which begins next October, and that the produced cotton will suffice the needs of yarn and yarn companies in the public and private sectors, and thus stop importing after 6 months if there is no need.
