Without rent, a family of 4 members (marriage and 2 children) needed
more than $ 34,580
for
not being homeless
and more than
$ 64,994
to
not be poor
, according to data from June of the
Statistics and Census
of the
City of Buenos Aires
.
In relation to a year ago, the poverty basket - which considers only basic foods -
had an increase of 54.2%
and the poverty basket - which includes general expenses - an increase of
47.6%
.
In 12 months, the poverty basket increased by
12,155 pesos
: it went from
$ 22,425 to $ 34,580
and the family poverty basket increased by 20,983 pesos: it rose from
$ 44,011 to $ 64,994
.
The total basic basket or "of poverty" of Buenos Aires, in addition to food, includes other general expenses but
not the rent of the house
.
Thus, the basic Buenos Aires basket for a family that rents a modest home
would exceed $ 85,000 per month
.
In June, staple foods increased 2.9% and the total basket 2.7%.
With these figures, between January and June, the basic family food basket increased in the City of Buenos Aires by
26.6%
and the poverty basket by
24.6%
.
Thus, due to its magnitude and incidence, the rise in the prices of food, other goods and services is
hitting the indigent and the poor with greater force
.
Between
$ 64,994 and $ 99,684
of income, the Directorate considers that these families are
vulnerable
or of a
fragile
middle class
.
And that to be considered "middle class", the income of a
typical
family should have exceeded
$ 99,684
in June
, which, adding a modest rent, without expenses, would exceed
$ 125,000
.
The latest data from the Buenos Aires Directorate (first quarter of this year) show that in the City of Buenos Aires
one in every 4 porteños is poor
and
4 out of 10 girls, boys and adolescents under 17 years old live in poor households
.
They are
114,000 poor more than a year ago
, adding a total of
817,000 people
.
It is
26.5%
of the
3,078,000
living in the City that cannot cover the cost of a basic basket of goods and services, versus
22.9% a year ago
, before the outbreak of the
pandemic
and the
restrictions
to activity.
Of the 817,000 poor people,
290,000 are indigent
-
9.4% of the Buenos Aires population
- which represents an
increase of 50,000 people
in that condition in relation to a year ago, who do not cover the cost of a basic
food
basket
only
.
They are the highest numbers since
2015
when the Buenos Aires Department of Statistics and Censuses began to measure living conditions in the Federal Capital.
The official statistics of Buenos Aires poverty shows a strong deterioration in 2016, an improvement in 2017, and from there with 14%, it continued to rise continuously:
16% in 2018, 19.1% in 2019, 22.9% in 2020 and 26.5% and this year
.
Homelessness had the same upward trajectory: from
4% in 2017, it rose to 4.3% in 2018, 6% in 2019, 7.8% in 2020 and 9.4% in 2021
.
From these figures it can be deduced that in 4 years,
361,000 poor people
were added to the City
, of which
167,000 are newly indigent.
