The lack of chips has slowed the car manufacturer BMW in Leipzig.
In the Saxon plant, it was only possible to produce on one out of five days this week, said spokesman Kai Lichte on Thursday.
The reason for this is the lack of semiconductors.
The magazine »Automobilwoche« had previously reported on it.
Around 4,000 cars could not have been built because of the production stop.
BMW Leipzig has so far got through the chip crisis without major failures, said Lichte.
It was hoped to be able to maintain production until the start of the three-week factory holidays on Monday.
But then at the end of last week the news came that important components could not be delivered.
Normally around 1,100 vehicles are built in the plant every day.
BMW produces the 1 Series, BMW 2 Series and the i3 electric car in Leipzig.
Volkswagen also affected
The shortage of semiconductors is currently causing problems for the entire automotive industry.
Volkswagen has also because of the lack semiconductor
i
can produce m the first half of a six-figure number of vehicles not.
The chip shortage affects almost the entire group to varying degrees, especially China and almost all car brands, said purchasing manager Murat Aksel at the online general meeting.
Despite the failed production, the car company is sticking to its sales targets.
According to this, deliveries by the group in 2021 - subject to the pandemic being successfully contained - should be significantly higher than the previous year.
