The market share of electric cars in Europe more than doubled in new car sales in the second quarter, the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA) said on Friday.

100% electric cars now represent 7.5% of new sales in Europe, against 3.5% in the second quarter of 2020. Over 210,000 (+ 231.6%) were sold, with strong growth in Spain and in Germany, in particular, but also in Austria and Belgium.

Close to the EU, the United Kingdom and Norway are also recording a strong increase in electricity sales.

Hybrids are trailing diesel cars

Gasoline cars, which the European Commission has proposed to ban for sale for 2035, now account for less than half of European sales, with 1.17 million vehicles sold and 41.8% market share, compared to 51 , 9% in the second quarter of 2020. Hybrids recover 19.3% of the market, trailing diesel cars (20.4%, against nearly 30% in 2020).

Plug-in hybrids represent 8.4% of the market, driven in particular by strong sales in Italy.

Many car manufacturers have made a radical commitment to the electric shift and have promised to remove combustion engines from their ranges by the 2030s, with some brands planning to go 100% electric by the year 2030, including Volvo and Opel ( Stellantis group).
