Due to the rapid increase in new infections in the US, the Internet giant Amazon is postponing the planned return of its employees to the offices until January. Instead of September 7th, January 3rd, 2022 is now the date from which employees should start coming to the office regularly, as the company explained on Thursday. This also applies to other countries where the return was planned for September.
Employees who came to the office in the meantime would still have to wear a mask or prove a full corona vaccination, Amazon said. The company employs more than a million people, of whom, however, probably only a small number have classic office jobs. Many employees work in logistics centers and delivery. Unlike Google or Facebook, Amazon has not yet imposed a vaccination requirement for employees.
The number of new corona infections in the USA has skyrocketed from around 10,000 per day in June to an average of almost 90,000.
The dramatic increase despite the widely available vaccinations is mainly attributed to the particularly contagious Delta variant of the virus.
Numerous large US companies have already postponed the return of their employees to work from the office, which is often planned for September, for one or more months.
