Ghost games to contain the corona pandemic and the failure of transfer revenues caused the Bundesliga soccer club Borussia Dortmund a higher loss in the past season.

With sales falling to 334.2 million euros (previous year: 370.2 million), the consolidated loss rose to just under 73 million euros (previous year: minus 44), as BVB announced on the basis of initial calculations.

The result in the transfer business collapsed to 15.4 million euros (previous year: 40.2).

In the years before the pandemic, BVB benefited from transfer proceeds like no other German club.

Among others, Ousmane Dembélé (for 105 million euros to FC Barcelona), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Christian Pulisic (for more than 60 million euros each in the Premier League) moved abroad for large sums.

Personnel expenses remained stable at around 215 million euros in 2020/2021.

Watzke: "Please get vaccinated"

To contain the corona pandemic, the stadiums remained almost completely empty last season.

The club, which will participate in the lucrative Champions League again this season, earned just 554,000 euros from the sale of tickets.

Before that it was more than 30 million euros.

The restrictions also made themselves felt in the merchandising business, among other things.

BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke made an appeal to the fans.

If you want us to feel something like normality again in the foreseeable future, please get vaccinated.

That is the key to having a business model again, which is in the black.

With ticket income of 500,000 euros in the past financial year, we can't do that.
