After the completion of the controversial Baltic Sea pipeline Nord Stream 2, the Russian energy giant Gazprom plans to pump 5.6 billion cubic meters of gas through the pipe this year.

The company announced.

According to earlier information from the operator, Nord Stream 2 AG, the laying work should be completed by the end of August.

There is currently no date when the almost completed pipeline will go into operation.

Nord Stream 2 is also supposed to bring Russian gas to Germany.

After the announcement by Gazprom, the gas price fell on Thursday, reported the Russian agency Interfax.

Nord Stream 2 runs from Vyborg in Russia through the Baltic Sea to Lubmin near Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The project is highly controversial.

The US government criticizes that Europe is making itself too dependent on Russia for its energy supply.

According to Gazprom, 33.7 billion cubic meters of gas were pumped through the existing Nord Stream pipeline in the first seven months of this year.

That is more than in the same period last year.

2020 was therefore a record year with a total of 59.3 billion cubic meters.
