An increase in the cost of living?

Depends on where you are checking

We hear all the time about price increases, but is that true?

How much have we paid for the shopping baskets of the last three years compared to the price paid this year?

An examination of prices shows that most retail chains have internalized the discourse on the cost of living and are striving to adjust prices to the purchasing power of consumers.

The big September is upon us, and as every year we find that the credit charges of the month of September do not benefit us: the remnants of the payments for the big vacation, shopping back to school and of course the Tishrei holidays.

Every year we examine and research the market: where we will get more and pay less for the products for the school year, how much we will spend on the holidays and of course - where it pays to purchase the full shopping basket for the holiday.

Last week we published the survey of the largest shopping baskets for the holiday in the various marketing chains https://finance.walla.co.il/item/3455399. We have seen gaps - sometimes of hundreds of shekels - between chains, but as we know the price is one of the main influencers in the buying decision but not really the only one influencing.

In recent years, consumers have been very vigilant about the cost of living.

Therefore, after presenting the shopping basket for the holiday and holidays of Tishrei 2021, we compared and examined the data (using the "Pricez" system for price comparison) and checked how much we would pay for the same basket in previous years, and whether the term "cost of living" - or rather, increase in cost of living , Really valid to describe our holiday shopping cart

Are we paying more - and if so, how much?

We looked at the largest shopping basket in the retail chain market and before we talk about the 2021 shopping basket and who offered the most affordable basket we saw changes in the pricing patterns of food chains: In food chains that had an image of more expensive stores the gaps between 2018 .

In other words: we pay less this year.

For example: in the Shufersal Deal chain, the basket this year is about 10% cheaper than the basket we purchased in 2018. Further, it can be said that although several years have passed, despite the availability problem due to the corona and although the purchase prices of most raw materials have risen, most chains To market conditions and consumer sensitivity that has developed here to price increases.

In the Freshmarket chain, we found a 3% discount compared to the 2018 basket, and in the Mega chain in the city, the cost of the basket is the same as in 2018.

Rami Levy: The most expensive and also the cheapest

The Rami Levy chain was able to present the cheapest basket for 2021. However, if you shop online, you may have felt the cost of living more than you: The cheapest basket for the holiday, more expensive than the 2018 basket by more than 15% (we will mention again that Despite the increase, this is the cheapest basket of those we examined. The shopping basket in Pavilion Wines is also 7.5% more expensive than the 2018 basket.

In 2020 we paid dearly, not just because of the closure

If we try to sum up the price changes over the last few years we will find a mixed trend with a clear common denominator: concentration - the most expensive have become slightly cheaper, the cheapest have become slightly more expensive and hence the subjective feelings of each of us about the cost of living.

But there is another statistic, a little surprising, when we look at the basket not in a multi-year perspective but in comparison to last year: a common phenomenon we found is that last year, 2020, we paid more for the basket.

By how much?

In Beitan wines we paid about 6% more than this year, in the mega chain in the city we paid 4% more, in Yochananoff 3% more, in the Rami Levy, Shufersal and Freshmarket chains the price increased by more than one percent.

On the other hand - since then prices have risen by 1.5% (Photo: None)

Last year the holiday meal was only with the nuclear family

The unit that was cheaper last year is the market warehouse chain.

What causes this?

One can only speculate: last year we were still under "Corona Shock".

Although in May-August 2020 the economy was released from a large part of the restrictions (the second closure was imposed only on September 18), the Israeli consumer was more captive and less free to conduct market surveys.

Family holiday meals included only the nuclear family and under such conditions the price (which even then we already understood is not the only consideration) became secondary.

According to the data, the effect of consumers and awareness of the environmental competition that led the shopping baskets to "fair" costs in relation to the price index can be seen.

It is important to note that we will know the "truth prices" only after the holiday, when the special promotions will end, most of which will reward a larger purchase.

prices are based on the reporting of the marketing networks to the Ministry of Economy and are processed through the Pricez website for price comparison and the CHP website.
