Ryanair returned to profit in July and August but forecasts a "difficult winter"

The Irish low-cost company Ryanair returned to profit in July and August at the height of the summer season but expects "

a difficult winter

", told AFP its boss Michael O'Leary on the sidelines of a press conference in London.

At the end of July, the low-cost carrier had published a loss for its delayed first quarter widened by 47% over one year to 273 million euros because of still low prices, high costs due to restrictions and uncertainties on travel, despite almost tripled turnover.

Worst exercise in history

The airline industry was one of the hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic with traffic wiped out for months, and the group had the worst year ever in 2020-2021 with a loss of around one billion euros.

He also decided at the start of the health crisis to cut some 3,000 jobs, or 15% of its workforce.
