The new generation seems to seek greater flexibility in the workplace, while business leaders are more measured.

Will Generation Z be 100% teleworking?

The question may arise when reading the latest study conducted by YouGov for the recruitment firm Nicholson Search & Selection.

Conducted in early July with 1,000 people, it shows that 61% of 18-34 year olds say they are 100% working remotely.

A significant increase compared to their elders qualified by the authors of the survey as "

unprecedented turn

".

This high figure does not surprise Julien Gargowitsch, CEO of Nicholson Search & Selection: "

Some young employees have so far only experienced telework

", many have found their marks and flourished there, enough to push them to contiue.

There is a desire to move towards more flexibility in the world of work,

” he adds.

A change which could not have unfavorable consequences on productivity, on the contrary "

the young generation is ready to work intensely but in a more flexible way

", notes Julien Gargowitsch.

Teleworking, "a fad"

However, it is far too early to announce the advent of 100% teleworking for all. Many still have difficulty understanding this mode of operation and its consequences. This is especially true for business leaders. If on the one hand they are 59% to declare themselves in favor of 100% teleworking, 16 points above non-decision makers all the same, they are still 52% to wish that their employees come one or more times a week. in the office. The answers could not be more contradictory. For the CEO of Nicholson Search & Selection several explanations are possible, in particular: "

a fad

", the leaders are "

not necessarily aware of what 100% teleworking

".

In addition, many respondents, both bosses and employees, fear a deterioration in the entrepreneurial spirit and integration of employees permanently out of the office.

A value that has remained strong despite the distance and "

managers have every interest in being inspired by it to build or maintain the values of their companies in order to attract and retain their talents

", underlines Julien Gargowitsch.

Teleworking, which has gained in force with the Covid-19, remains a recent practice in France. As recalled by an analysis by the Dares, published on August 5, 2021 studying the working conditions before the health crisis, “

teleworking was still not very widespread: in 2019, 4% of employees practiced it regularly, that is to say at least once a week, and up to 9% including occasionally, ie at least a few days or half-days per month

”. A figure close to those of 2017, which shows a certain stability so far. At that time teleworking was sociologically marked, “

it is above all the executives who teleworked: 14% regularly, up to 28% taking into account occasional practices. Conversely, due to the nature of their activity, and even when they use computers, workers as well as employees in commerce and services hardly practiced teleworking,

”points out the study. Since then, the health crisis deeply upset the habits of employees.
