Even after the end of midsummer, Mallorca is very busy - regardless of the corona pandemic.

With 2282 take-offs and landings, Son Sant Joan airport in the island's capital Palma handled only 29 fewer flights between Friday and Sunday than in the previous week at the end of August, said the Spanish airport administrator Aena.

The weekend flights are mainly connections to other European countries.

The Prime Minister of the Balearic Islands, Francina Armengol, had stated in a first balance sheet of the summer that the high season on Mallorca and the other islands in the region, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera, was "infinitely better than expected".

Son Sant Joan has already reached around 80 percent of the passenger volume of 2019, the year before the pandemic outbreak.

In fact, Mallorca came through the crisis comparatively well this summer.

According to data from Eurocontrol, the European organization for the safety of aviation, the Mallorcan airport made it into the top 10 airports with the highest number of flights in Europe in August.

Last week he finished eighth behind Barcelona and ahead of London Heathrow.

In Spain, the nationwide seven-day incidence was last 75, in the Balearic Islands it was slightly higher at 88.

These are similar values to those in Germany (80).

While the trend in Spain has been declining for weeks, the numbers in Germany have been rising again for some time.

Spain is therefore no longer listed as a high-risk area by Germany.

This means that all quarantine obligations for returnees are no longer applicable.

Spain, in turn, classifies Germany as a risk area at least until next Sunday: All visitors from Germany over the age of twelve must prove a vaccination, recovery or a negative test upon entry.
