Mercado Pago: no more can be paid with a third party's credit card

, the giant Mercado Pago announced to its customers a small change in their wallet.

In line with a Central Bank regulation, the fintech

will

no

longer allow credit or debit cards in the names of third parties to be associated with accounts.

At the same time, Mercado Libre's virtual wallet said that in addition to this measure "we will make sure" that

each account "is always protected"

with: I) verification and authentication methods that strengthen the security of each account;

II) Identity validations to confirm that the user is the person who is using the account.

The measure is in line with a new regulation of the Central Bank, which in mid-July established that

digital wallets (PSP) that can only associate credit and debit cards, savings accounts or payment accounts or other sources of funds only of the account holder.

"In this way, it seeks to prevent the use of third-party data in a wallet that can be obtained through fraud or deception," the monetary authority had announced in a timely statement.

The measure

came into effect from August 1 for new accounts

and will have an impact from next November 1 for existing accounts.

Mercado Pago went ahead and in 10 days it will stop allowing any third party plastic to be used.

In social networks, many explained the use cases that make them have third-party cards linked to their accounts, and they range from taking advantage of bank promotions, to purchasing drugs for older adults, for example.

While there are no figures on the economic damage to individuals and entities that generate fraud and cybercrime, alarms are growing.

According to data from the Ministry of Internal Trade, this type of complaints increased by 286% year-on-year in the comparison of the first four months (January-April) of 2020 and 2021. In the first four months of this year, there were 1,312 cases initiated.
