Anne Hidalgo and Valérie Pécresse divided on tourism

The mayor of Paris wants to do without foreign visitors. The president of the region is active for their return.


Both dream of being at the Élysée, but they oppose the profile of the tourists they want on the Champs-Élysées.

While Parisian tourism is at its worst since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and it is not about to recover, Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of the capital, and Valérie Pécresse, the president of the Ile-de-France region, are opposed on the strategy of relaunching the sector.

The stakes are high: in 2019, tourism represented 15% of jobs and 13% of Paris' GDP.

Since then, revenues have melted and jobs have only been temporarily saved thanks to short-time working.

Some hotels and shops are still closed and a multitude of activities are slowing down ... If the absence of most of the foreign visitors is the main obstacle to the recovery, their return is not unanimous.

Anne Hidalgo wants to tackle the carbon cost of long-haul flights and the pollution of Charles-de-Gaulle and Orly airports.
